"Lost Connections" is a fusion of several physical performance arts, aiming to portray universal human strategies for the pursuit of pleasure, desires, and connections. It is character-driven play that follows the lives of a travelling circus troupe and is a visually striking show in which stories unfold through the language of the body, may that be dance, acrobatics, or pantomime. The piece explores one stop of the never-ending journey of a circus troupe, in which we gain insight into the rehearsal procedure and backstage lives of the performers, and later see the circus performance itself. Essentially, the characters are all lacking crucial connections, e.g. connections to others, connections to the self, to nature, to values that truly have weight, but most importantly, we aim to show a severe disconnection from language. This disconnection from verbal performance will manifest itself differently in each character, depicting their individual archetypes, but on the whole, it will establish the unreliability of verbal language. The director’s choice of genre – physical and dance theatre, is thus no coincidence. This production aims to broaden the Durham performance arts scene by cutting down on text-heavy performances and adding movement as the primary source of narration. We would like to introduce our production in the form of an experimental film that talks honestly about the struggles of our species on an individual and collective level, whilst at the same time providing and intense visual spectacle.
